Dating site eHarmony warns of a new dating trend - “snowmanning”

It may be the most wonderful time of the year, but not if you’re the victim of winter’s new dating trend: “snowmanning.” It’s when your holiday fling fizzles out by New Year and experts warn it will happen to more than half of us.

Rachel Lloyd, relationship expert at dating site eHarmony, explains that lots of people find someone special to celebrate Christmas and enjoy the holiday season with, but it may end soon after the presents are all unwrapped.

“After the drinks stop flowing and decorations come down, sometimes the initial burst of chemistry wears off,” she explains. “Our research shows that lots of people then retreat from their new relationships, a trend we are coining ‘snowmanning.’”

  • The names comes from the 1982 movie “The Snowman,” where a boy builds a snowman that comes to life and takes him to the North Pole. But after a day of fun, the snowman thaws and the kid has nothing but the memories left. It also refers to the ice-cold rejection some folks may feel when their passionate, but short-lived romance comes to an end in January.
  • According to eHarmony, around 53% of people who’ve been dating this season will become “snowmanning” victims within the next few weeks, so beware singles.
